Romantic Ringlets

Pin Curls:
Kate Winslet's curls were achieved by pin curling her hair each night (and touch ups with a curling iron). Nocturne's site has excellent instructions for pin curling. Nocturne's focus is "Swing" hair but the basic technique is the same.

Rag Curls:
This technique is similar to pin curling, except that bits of cloth are used to shape and hold the curls instead of fingers and clips. Rag curls are more comfortable to sleep on than clips but the curls tend to be very tight.

Apply gel or mousse to roots if desired. Wrap damp hair on a strip of cloth about 2x6 inches (folded in half widthwise), tying the scrap in a knot when you get to the scalp. Allow hair to dry completely for best results. Style with your fingers not a brush!

Soft Fabric Curls:
This is the easiest method I have found to curl my generally un-curl-able hair(is that a word?). Soft fabric curlers allow more control in determining the size of the curls and also have the advantage of being comfortable to sleep on. The curlers are a made of soft foam (approx. 1x1x1) with a piece of wire through the middle & covered with fabric (flannel). You could make them but they are cheap so why bother. (Wal-Mart's are the cheapest).

The technique is the same as above: Apply gel or mousse if desired. Wrap damp hair around the curler, twisting the wire ends together when you reach the scalp. Allow hair to dry completely for best results. Style with your fingers not a brush!

To achieve loose curls like Rose, use a mixture of large sections of hair and doubled curlers (2 curlers per curl). For an even more Pre-Rapheal look, twist the sections of hair slightly before wrapping on the curler. Don't have a full 12 hours to air-dry your hair or is it a damp night? - Wait until your hair is almost dry before curling it. Even a hint of dampness in your hair will take to the curling and keep for hours -at least my fine, limp, straight hair does!

Permanent Wave:
For those of us who are not blessed with naturally curly hair the longest lasting way to have curls like Rose is to get a spiral perm. I did this effectively for 3 years. Take lots of pictures to show your stylist what you want. I have found the more pictures you have, the better the results will be. Below is the sheet I show my stylist for a Rose perm:

Curling Iron:
Another option is to use a hot curling iron. This method can be time consuming with long hair but it works. Large double barrel curling irons also work well for this style.

Apply gel to damp hair, allow hair to dry. Divide hair into one inch sections. Curl with a 1 inch barrel. Style with your fingers not a brush!
